Senior Research Fellow - International Security
The Global Governance and Security Centre provides governments, businesses and societies with the information, networks and tools to tackle the challenges of an international system under strain. Our research, convening and outreach to diverse stakeholders offer avenues towards retaining stable patterns of multilateral cooperation in a world where global issues continue to demand global action.
Your role will form a critical part of our dynamic, multi-disciplinary International Security team within the Centre, taking a leading position in our work across the conflict spectrum. Your role will particularly focus on developing new research workstreams around how warfare and escalation dynamics are changing, the role of new and disruptive technologies within this and how the balance between conventional and new technologies are reshaping conflict.
Main Responsibilities
Design and delivery of research within existing and new research projects, with a focus on modern conflict, alliances, rearmament dynamics and new and emerging technologies;
Build our strategic position as a leader on issues relating to international security within our programme strategy and the overall framework of the Global Governance and Security Centre;
Author/co-author succinct, policy-relevant research and analysis, ensuring the quality of outputs;
Identify and pursue opportunities for communication and dissemination of project findings, through seminars, workshops, publications and online resources;
Support the institute’s convening through curating high-level private and public events on relevant issues;
Maintain and improve existing high standards and ensure the quality of convening and research outputs;
Draw on your own networks and build on them to develop strong relationships in relevant areas with policymakers, policy experts and the media, and ensure research activities and outputs gain publicity and visibility through personal policy networks, the website, social media, and other media channels;
Build and nurture partnerships with internal and external research partners and co-create research approaches that deliver recommendations for innovative solutions to security policy challenges;
Establish and maintain strategic relationships with experts, academia, businesses, governments and not-for-profit organisations to expand our reach, visibility and impact.
Formulate and write research grant proposals, develop funding leads and relationships, and create momentum around programme projects to support this research agenda, in collaboration with other programmes;
Maintain strong and long-lasting relationships with foundations, government funding departments, corporate sponsors, and other significant funding sources;
Build a presence and reputation across the house, engaging with Chatham House activities outside the Centre, positively collaborating with colleagues across the institute within research and operations and actively contributing to the delivery of the Chatham House strategy;
Collaborate across Chatham House to optimize expertise from other thematic and regional programmes;
Support a culture of continuous improvement, driving efficiencies and knowledge sharing; inspiring others by example;
Contribute to furthering Chatham House's EDI strategic objectives.
Requirements
Essential Skills and Experience:
An expert in shaping innovative security policy agendas as outlined in our programme strategy and the overall strategy of the Global Governance and Security Centre;
Significant experience of successfully delivering substantial initiatives or multidisciplinary programmes of work with high impact;
A strong track record on engaging with and influencing policymakers and decision makers across different geographies in organisations of influence, including governments;
Demonstrated experience of successfully managing projects and budgets, providing leadership and working collaboratively within a team, delivering projects with external partners and consultants to tight budgets and timeframes;
A creative problem solver and team player, with the curiosity to explore new approaches, topics and ideas;
A substantial track record of successfully fundraising and securing financial support from an established network of philanthropic foundations, government departments, international organisations and businesses;
Proficient author with consistent record of successfully leading the delivery of substantial research outputs;
Proven track record of effective communications through different mediums – and creative in identifying and delivering unique communication opportunities.
