The Digital Society Programme at Chatham House investigates the geopolitics and political economy of emerging technology. It platforms the minimum viable digital infrastructure states and companies need to build to have agency in the 21st century. It develops new, pragmatic governance ideas to scale and manage it, engaging in multilateral forums and technology communities alike, and acting as a bridge between them.

The Research Associate will be integral to our small but driven, creative and hardworking team and will play a key role in delivering projects, growing our funding base, and engaging our networks.

Main Responsibilities

• Drive innovation in policy research delivery using emerging technologies, particularly in the application of AI tools.

• Conduct quantitative and qualitative research, including desk-based research, literature reviews, stakeholder analysis and data analysis.

• Present technical research findings creatively, including through sophisticated coding and data visualisation.

• Convey complex information clearly and concisely to different audiences in oral and written formats, tailoring content and approach accordingly.

• Prepare, write and contribute to various outputs, including papers, reports, policy briefs and op-eds.

• Prepare and present research findings in different formats and to different audiences, including to governments, the private sector and technical researchers.

• Plan and coordinate events, workshops, conferences, roundtables, managing all aspects from concept to execution and moderation.

• Collaborate with colleagues and project partners to ensure effective coordination and communication of plans, progress, and outcomes.

• Provide direct support to the Programme Director and Senior Research Fellow.

• Support the identification and development of fundraising opportunities and contribute to the preparation of funding applications, proposals, workplans, and budgets.

• Contribute to the delivery of the Chatham House EDI Strategy.

Person Specification

Essential Skills and Experience:

• Proven research experience on issues related to technology governance, including areas such as digital public infrastructure, artificial intelligence, international digital cooperation, and technology platforms.

• Experience applying a range of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and delivering high-quality research outputs.

• Strong writing skills, with experience producing policy-relevant analysis.

• Experience communicating research findings through a variety of channels and formats, including developing creative and engaging approaches to research dissemination.

• Experience supporting fundraising activities, including drafting concept notes, contributing to funding proposals, and engaging with donors and partners.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and persuasively to a range of audiences.

• Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships and collaborate with colleagues and external stakeholders.

• Experience supporting the design and delivery of research events, workshops, and policy discussions.

• Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities effectively.

• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and fact-checking skills, with the ability to work accurately and effectively under pressure.
