Librarian - Job description
The Librarian will be expected to participate in a full range of library duties including, but not limited to, cataloguing, staffing the Enquiry Desk, delivering user education, and document supply. In addition, the role has responsibility for the library management system (currently Soutron), which also acts as the repository for the Institute’s publications output, and other information systems including EBSCO Discovery and OpenAthens.
It will also be important for the person appointed to attend occasional out of hours events to represent the library.
Main Responsibilities
- Actively administer and develop the Library Management System (currently Soutron), to include system updates and upgrades.
- Lead on developing and running the resource discovery service (currently EBSCO Discovery) and other online resources.
- Generate regular statistical reports from the LMS and other systems, as well as usage reports from other online resources.
- Assist with the promotion of Library services and resources.
- Maintain and develop user guides and provide user support and training for online resources.
- Cataloguing print and online resources.
- General enquiry and information work.
- Build and maintain relationships with colleagues across the institute and external partners, working collaboratively with others.
- Act as the main contact with the LMS and discovery supplier over system issues.
- Deliver library inductions and training in using online resources for library users.
- Contribute to the delivery of Chatham House’s EDI strategy.
Requirements
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Professional qualification in librarianship.
- Experience of administering library management systems and discovery services, and working with online resources and digital media in a library environment.
- Excellent IT skills, including key functions of a library management system, database searching skills, Excel spreadsheets.
- Working knowledge of cataloguing.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, approachable and a good communicator.
- Experience of answering enquiries using a range of resources.
Highly Desirable Skills and experience:
- An interest in and/or knowledge of international relations.
- Experience of EBSCO Discovery Service, Soutron or similar.
- Experience in a research or similar working environment.
- Experience of OpenAthens or similar authentication system
